Changes in serum proteins associated with metamorphosis in salamanders of the family Ambystomatidae.
نویسنده
چکیده
-l. The effect of metamorphosis on the serum proteins of three genera and five species of ambystomatid salamanders was examined by electrophoresis. 2. Four of the five species showed a significant increase in the fastest fraction upon metamorphosis. 3. Three of the five species showed a significant metamorphic increase in the second fastest fraction. 4. Four of the five exhibited a significant metamorphic increase in total protein. 5. The results support earlier hypotheses that a metamorphic increase in the fast components of amphibian blood serum serves to maintain blood volume in the desiccating, terrestrial environment of the transformed organism.

Ontogenetic evidence for the Paleozoic ancestry of salamanders.
The phylogenetic positions of frogs, salamanders, and caecilians have been difficult to establish. Data matrices based primarily on Paleozoic taxa support a monophyletic origin of all Lissamphibia but have resulted in widely divergent hypotheses of the nature of their common ancestor. Analysis that concentrates on the character states of the stem taxa of the extant orders, in contrast, suggests...
متن کاملOntogeny of the Hyobranchial Apparatus in the Salamanders Ambystoma talpoideum (Ambystomatidae) and Notoph
Comparison of metamorphosis of skull and hyobranchial system in two species of neotenic salamanders reveals two different types of neoteny. A mbystoma talpoideum is completely neotenic owing to delayed metamorphosis. Notophthalmus viridescens exhibits limited neoteny as a result of incomplete metamorphosis. Morphological details of neoteny are compared to life history in both species in order t...
متن کاملPigment patterns of larval salamanders (Ambystomatidae, Salamandridae): the role of the lateral line sensory system and the evolution of pattern-forming mechanisms.
In many species of salamanders, pigment cells derived from the neural crest give rise to a horizontal stripe pattern in hatchling larvae. A defining element of these horizontal stripe patterns is a region over the middle of the myotomes that is relatively free of melanophores. This study shows that formation of a "melanophore-free region" and horizontal stripe pattern in Ambystoma tigrinum tigr...
متن کاملMorphological variation of hypaxial musculature in salamanders (Lissamphibia: caudata).
Despite the acknowledged importance of the locomotory and respiratory functions associated with hypaxial musculature in salamanders, variation in gross morphology of this musculature has not been documented or evaluated within a phylogenetic or ecological context. In this study, we characterize and quantify the morphological variation of lateral hypaxial muscles using phylogenetically and ecolo...
متن کاملConserved vertebrate chromosome segments in the large salamander genome.
Urodele amphibians (salamanders) are important models for embryological, physiological, and natural history research and are also a biomedically important group because they are the only vertebrates capable of regenerating entire organ systems. To enhance the utility of salamanders for biomedical research and for understanding genome evolution, genetic linkage analysis was used to identify chro...
